TEC Controller FAQ

Technical or scientific applications require that an object is actively kept at a temperature as constant as possible with the help of thermal elements and independently of temperature fluctuations. To meet these requirements, Peltier Elements are often used for cooling and heating or resistance heaters for heating. The TEC Controller controls the temperature by delivering current and voltage to the thermal element, regulated by feedback from temperature sensors.
This could be for example:
  • CCD cooling
  • Climate chamber
  • DNA sequencing
  • Thermal cycling test
  • Behavioural research of bacteria and insects
  1. Define the operating range of your Peltier Element and choose the operating current and voltage (IO/UO). How-to in this short Video (from min. 0.47)

    Note: To cool efficiently, we recommend to over-dimension your Peltier Element so that

    • IO/IMax = 0.0 …. 0.33 if ∆T < 25°K or
    • IO/IMax = 0.33… 0.66 if ∆T > 25°K
    And at the same time
    • To keep ∆T as small as possible (e.g. with heat sink, fan on the hot side)
  2. With the current and voltage now known, you can select the TEC Controller at our webshop, based on the value "Bipolar output"
To the detailed video
  1. Read out the operating voltage of the TEC Controller

    Note: If you are working with a system, note the operating voltage of it

  2. Calculate the power consumption of the Peltier Element (PPe = UAp * IAp)
  3. Add the power consumption of the Peltier Element to the power consumption of the TEC Controller (rule of thumb: PTot = power consumption of the Peltier Element * 1.2)
  4. Check: PTot <= POut power supply
  5. With the values from 3. you can find appropriate power supplies at your electronics dealer
Yes, the controllers can be used with e.g. HyperTerminal. Please refer to the Communication Protocol at the download section..
Yes, this is possible with the TEC Controller Software higher then v3.xx without any adjustments.
